Making reading comfortable
Everyone reads differently. Some people like big text, some need more space between lines, and some find bright screens hard at night. You can change all of that here, and the site will remember it on your device.
The Aa button
Look for the Aa button at the top of every page. In a book, it’s in the reader’s toolbar too. It opens your reading settings. Changes happen straight away, so you can try things and see what suits you.
Choose a font
There are four fonts to pick from:
- Book (Literata) is the standard one, made for long reading on screens.
- Clear (Atkinson Hyperlegible Next) has letters that are hard to mix up, which helps if you have low vision.
- Lexend has wider spacing that some people find easier to follow.
- Dyslexic (OpenDyslexic) has weighted letters that some readers with dyslexia prefer.
If one doesn’t suit you, try another. There’s no right answer.
Text size and line spacing
You can make the text smaller or up to half as big again. You can also add more space between the lines, which can stop your eyes slipping to the wrong line.
Your browser’s own zoom works too. On a computer, hold Ctrl (or Cmd on a Mac) and press the plus key. On a phone, you can pinch to zoom or make the text bigger in your phone’s settings.
Colours
There are three themes:
- Lamplight is the standard, a warm dark room. It’s gentle on the eyes at night.
- Daylight is lighter, like a grey, rainy afternoon.
- High contrast uses pure black and white for the strongest difference between text and background.
You can also switch between Lamplight and Daylight with the lamp’s pull-cord.
Inside a book, you can change the paper colour as well: cream, white or night. In High contrast mode the pages are plain black and white.
Calm motion
Turn on Calm motion if movement on screen bothers you. It switches off the page-turning animation and the moving effects, such as the rain and the drifting light on the home page. If your phone or computer is already set to reduce motion, the site follows that without you doing anything.
Book view or scroll view
The reader shows books as pages you turn, like a paper book. If you’d rather scroll down one long page, choose Scroll view. You can switch back at any time.
Using a keyboard
The site works with a keyboard. Press Tab to move between links and buttons. Inside the reader:
- the right and left arrow keys, or Page Down and Page Up, turn the page
- Space turns to the next page
- Home goes to the start of the book and End goes to the end.
Screen readers
The full text of every book is on the page as real text, so screen readers can read it from start to finish, by heading or by chapter. The 3D room on the home page is decoration only. Screen readers skip it, and you don’t miss anything by not seeing it.
Your settings stay with you
Settings are saved in your browser on this device only. If you read on a phone and a laptop, set them up on each. The cookies page explains how this works.
Accessibility statement
This statement covers cewinship.co.uk.
This is a personal website, so the public sector accessibility regulations don’t apply to it. I’ve written this statement anyway, because I want everyone to be able to read the books.
How accessible the site is
The site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. I believe most of it does, but some parts are known not to yet. They’re listed below.
Known problems
- PDF downloads may not be fully accessible. They might not work well with screen readers or let you change the text size. The same books are on the site as web pages, which do, so please read them there if the PDF doesn’t suit you.
- The 3D room on the home page is decoration. Screen readers skip it, and some people may find it hard to see or follow. Nothing in it is needed to use the site: the books on its shelf are also listed as ordinary links further down the page. Calm motion stops it moving.
Tell me about a problem
If something on the site is hard to use, or you need a book in a different format, please email hello@cewinship.co.uk. It helps to tell me:
- which page you were on
- what went wrong
- what device, browser or assistive technology you use, if you know.
I’ll reply within 2 weeks and try to fix it, or find another way to get you the book.
How this statement was prepared
I wrote this statement on 24 October 2026, based on how the site was designed and built. I’ll review it when the site changes in a big way, and at least once a year.
